Two things surprised me about this book. The first was that it had been written at all ‐ female suffrage does not strike me as a particularly “hot” issue at the moment; what is there new to say on the subject? The second surprise was that, after reviewing so many encyclopaedias that always seemed to be compiled or edited by US academics, often with a marked US bias, this one, by a mainstream US publisher, should be compiled by three academics at UK universities (Exeter and the West of England)!
