June 18, 2012 marked the 200th anniversary of the start of the war of 1812. This milestone did not get much notice here in the US. Despite giving rise to the national anthem (not to mention the catchy Johnny Horton tune, The Battle of New Orleans) the war is not taught extensively in US schools, often getting lost in history classes focusing on larger, longer and bloodier wars.
