Depending on which book you consult, Scotland can claim anything from 165 to 790 islands. Undoubtedly, its 6,000 miles of contorted coastline, comprising 69 per cent of the total UK coastline, shelters many islands. But exactly what do we mean by an island? Is it determined by size or must it support habitation by either man or animal? Must it be permanently surrounded by water? These were the initial questions which Haswell‐Smith had to answer on setting out to compile, in the first instance for his own personal satisfaction, a listing of the Scottish islands.
