UK reference librarians will be familiar with the numerous volumes of the English Place‐Name Society, which for over a hundred years have been publishing detailed analyses of the place‐names of English counties. Scotland has had no equivalent (the recently founded Scottish Place‐Name Society not having the necessary resources) and only a very few Scottish counties have the benefit of a full‐scale scholarly account of their names.
