Only after that monumental series The Buildings of England was complete did its publishers begin The Buildings of Scotland, and it has as yet covered just half of the country. It now faces serious competition from the series sponsored by the Royal Incorporation of Architects of Scotland (which is two‐thirds of the way through its progress). The latter volumes have the advantage of being popularly priced and small enough to fit in the average pocket, but in spite of being inevitably more compressed in content, are equally authoritative. Moreover, some of their numerous illustrations are in colour.
