The phrase “Fun without Vulgarity” used to appear on posters advertising the Moore and Burgess minstrel troupe, who “prided themselves on the propriety of their shows” and “wooed and won the respectable classes” with their performances in Piccadilly in the late nineteenth century. This attractively produced, large‐format paperback contains 80 annotated reproductions of late‐Victorian and Edwardian “popular entertainment” posters, which have been selected by Catherine Haill from an archive in the Public Record Office at Kew.
