Few countries have experienced such dramatic changes in the past few years as the former Soviet Union. The demise of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) after the abortive coup d’êtat in August 1991, and the fall of Mikhail Gorbachev a few weeks later, fundamentally altered the course of a country that for centuries has been a source of speculation in the West. A genuine “torrent of data” (in the words of Steve Boilard) has overwhelmed the former Sovietologists recently and to provide some guidance in this torrent is the principal object of Boilard’s bibliography.
