The Popular Magazine in Britain and the United States, 1880‐1960

Alexander Pope summed up the whole trade of ephemeral journalism as long ago as 1728 in his Dunciad where “magazine” was first used in its modern sense. He said the “Cave of Poverty” (a pun on Cave the publisher) was the source of such prints:
