In his foreword to this Guide, Jeffrey Stone, of the Department of Geography, University of Aberdeen, remarks: “A guide to early British maps as sources for historical study was published for the first time only in 1994. Africa is now provided with a more comprehensive guide to maps and map‐making across all of its states and remaining dependent territories.” The point is well made and, after examining this guide to the mapping of what used to be known as “the dark continent”, the reviewer is in no mood to dispute it.
