In compiling this encyclopaedia, Jerry Keenan adopted three types of entry: important events in the overall history of the Indian wars; events of lesser importance but significant in a particular region at a particular time; and individuals who clearly made a special impact on the events of their own times. In addition some general reference entries were chosen to provide specific information or insight.
