“Tremble all ye oppressors of the world!” the Dissenter Richard Price declaimed before the London Revolution Society on 4 November 1789, “Restore to mankind their rights, and consent to the correction of abuses, before they and you are destroyed together”. This sermon provoked a “pamphlet war” that elicited Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), Tom Paine’s The Rights of Man (1791), Mary Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790), and her Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792).
