J.L. Borges is said to have published a Spanish translation of Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince at the age of nine. In 1925 he translated the last page of Joyce’s Ulysses. In 1940 he translated William Faulkner’s latest novel, The Wild Palms. I got the impression from Gerald Martin’s 92‐page chapter here on “Narrative since c. 1920” that if he had done nothing else, Borges’s efforts as a translator would have made him a crucial figure in the spread of literary Modernism in Latin America in the first half of the twentieth century.
