This entirely new work can be described as encyclopaedic in that it comprises articles arranged in alphabetical order, but the reader needs to know that the components are all essays ranging from five hundred to several thousand words “focussing on almost three hundred topics” as the preface indicates. Since these essays are supported by a very adequate index, the enquirer seeking information from this work should refer to this if there is not a general article on the person or event for which data is sought.
