The origin of this account of Sir Joseph Hooker’s travels was the idea of issuing a small book reproducing some of the recently restored drawings made by him, on his travels in India, that are held at Kew. Ray Desmond, former librarian at Kew, persuaded the authorities to produce this, much larger, work covering all Hooker’s travels and plant hunting. His first voyage was with Ross on the sailing ships Erebus and Terror between 1839 and 1843.
