The authors tell us in the introduction to this book that the word “textile” derives from the Latin verb texere which the Romans used to mean “to weave”, “to braid” or “to construct”. As such, it has a broad meaning and is open to interpretation. The authors have followed this meaning and taken a very broad approach to the range of topics included in a book on textiles.

World Textiles aims to provide a broad overview of traditional handmade textiles from across the globe in a single volume. By displaying fabrics from many different countries side‐by‐side, they enable readers to draw comparisons and gain an awareness of the tremendous diversity of stylistic interpretations. Textiles are an expression of the identity of a community. As communities evolve, change or even die out, so do their textiles. The authors have tried to select textiles that represent living cultures and are still individually made using traditional methods employed for generations. A total of 778 illustrations, 551 in colour, clearly show the reader the techniques employed for each textile. Many of the textiles illustrated were collected from the authors’ own travels, others have been lent by enthusiasts and collectors.

The book opens with an introductory chapter covering the history of textiles, and the development of fabrics, yarns and decoration. The eight main sections of the book cover materials, non‐loom textiles, loom‐woven textiles, painted and printed textiles, dyes, sewing, embroidery and embellishment. Specific textiles are discussed with a short entry summarising techniques, uses and distribution where relevant. Section two, on non‐loom textiles, for example, includes entries on knitting, crochet, macramé and lace.

This book succeeds very well in drawing together examples of traditional textiles from around the globe. An extensive bibliography directs the reader to further sources on specific countries, materials and techniques. There is also a very useful guide to museum collections and an index which permits the reader to draw together information on, for example, one particular country. This is a wonderful book, clearly written and arranged, and superbly illustrated, which succeeds in showing the incredible diversity of traditional textiles.
