At first glance this latest addition to the Longman Companions to History Series appears to be a cram‐book on the subject of Renaissance Europe, and the dedication which reads: “Written with Warwick students in mind” does nothing to dispel this thought. A cram‐book it may be, but after careful perusal a better epithet would be to describe it as a reference book par excellence. Stella Fletcher is a history lecturer at King Alfred’s College in Winchester, but she proves herself adept at both writing for students’ needs, and also producing a comprehensive book of reference.
