The Hebrides: A Guide to the Islands of Western Scotland

The Hebrides of Scotland consist of some 500 islands split into the two groupings of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Due to their separation from the mainland, each island has its own unique character. The Hebrides are diverse in landscape and wildlife and rich in history and archaeology. The islands have been inhabited for 6,000 years and have therefore a long, and at times turbulent, history. The Vikings raided and settled on several islands from the ninth century onwards and it was not until the thirteenth century that the Norsemen handed the islands back to the kingdom of Scotland.
