Spain’s transition from an authoritarian political system to modern liberal democracy has brought profound changes both to society and culture in the Iberian peninsula. Entry into the European Community in 1986 was followed in 1992 by the staging of the Barcelona Olympics, Expo ’92 in Seville, and Madrid’s tenure as European capital of culture.
