It must be coincidence that all but two of the 35 tracks on this exhilarating sampler are shorter than two minutes each. In Spain, I have certainly heard longer ballads. Lomax’s choice was determined after a month of wandering the Spanish peninsula and gives a good cross‐section of the singing styles: in the northern provinces choral music that is spare and economical; the central zone more solo or unison singing, often of a narrative nature; in the south, intense and emotional performance.
