Reading the book is certainly quieter than playing the instrument, but one of the aims of this series (last reviewed by us at RR 98/461) is to inspire five‐ to seven‐year‐old children to learn. And after all these years an adult can learn too: the small hand drum I brought back from Kathmandu for my then young son was (or is ‐ the grandsons play it now) a damaru. Certainly, one of the notable features of this series is its worldwide coverage of a range of instruments within each category and, in texts well suited to the target age range, plenty of facts. A glossary and single‐page simple index complete each volume, in a continuingly interesting series with both a musical and worldwide cultural theme.
