The pervasive theme of this atlas ‐ the fourth in the Routledge Atlases of American History ‐ is slavery. Divided into six thematic parts, all are intended to demonstrate “that slavery was not merely a constellation of ideas, but a cultural institution that left a deep imprint, literally and figuratively, upon the American nation”.
