The period covered by this volume is traditionally seen as the “golden age” of the Roman Empire. These years, from Vespasian to the Antonines, were a period of political stability; indeed, the first edition was called The Imperial Peace. There was, however, much change as well, and there were dangerous external attacks and serious internal revolts.
