This volume is No. 7 in the Blackwell Companions to Literature and Culture series and it more than comes up to the standard of the previous six. Comparisons are difficult in a way, because the previous books in this series have not covered a period of nearly 200 years, as this one does. Instead, they have been devoted either to individual writers like Chaucer and Shakespeare, or they have covered movements such as Romanticism and the Gothic novel. The one exception to that generalisation is No. 2, which was devoted to Victorian literature and culture.
