Astonishingly readable reference work is peppered with accounts of wonderfully eccentric characters their contributions to our knowledge of British butterflies. I hadn’t realised that Victorian stovepipe hats were used to store specimens dead or alive! This is a social as well as a scientific history engagingly written presented in a beautifully produced volume. I cannot think of work that can be compared to it.
