Purchasing is not the only option when a company needs new equipment and in 1999, the equipment leasing market world‐wide was valued at US$473.5 billion. Leased items today can range from aircraft and industrial machinery to photocopiers and computers. This 22nd edition of the World Leasing Yearbook provides a ready reference source for all players in the leasing market.

The first section provides a series of short, signed essays on current trends. These consider US outbound cross‐border leasing; asset securitisation, Leaseurope statistics, the International Accounting Standard accounting for leases; and background to the Unidroit Convention. This section begins with a nine‐page global leasing report, which ranks the top 50 leasing markets by volume in 1999. A separate section also considers leasing software and the IT market. Contact details of companies and the types of leasing software they provide are also included.

The bulk of this directory consists of the country reviews. In addition to an overview of the market within each country, these provide the names of companies in the individual countries offering leasing services together with their full contact details and type of leasing activities undertaken. Major legal and taxation issues pertinent to a country are also covered. Finally the names and contact details of leasing associations are given.

This directory is the only annually updated reference book to cover the international leasing market. It is, however, very specialised and is only likely to find its way on to the shelves of major reference collections aside from those who specialise in the industry.
