On first looking at these I expected to conclude that they were over‐ambitious. For each volume covers the whole world over vast periods of time: Ancient China, India and the Americas as well as from Mesopotamia to Rome and the Celts; and in mediaeval Europe from Byzantium to the fifteenth century, with chapters on mediaeval China, Japan, Africa, the Incas and Aztecs. Furthermore, each has an introduction indicating the sources of our knowledge and final chapters on clothing materials and accessories.
