The nineteenth century in Europe and the USA was a period of rapid and profound social and political change. Revolution punctuated this period at beginning, middle and end, with absolute monarchies toppling to be replaced by dictatorships, constitutional monarchies and republics. The century witnessed the early struggles by workers, women and indigenous peoples for freedom and equality. Visual arts of this period are marked by restiveness, change, modernism and rebelliousness as artists challenged prevailing definitions of art and social order.
