As The Catholic Encyclopedia, originally published between 1907 and 1914, the forbears of this well‐known reference work took on the status of a standard encyclopedia about Catholicism, above all in the USA. That 15‐volume work (volumes 1 to 14 were published between 1907 and 1912, and volume 15 was the index, published 1914) was regarded as a major achievement in Catholic scholarship.
