The latest addition to the Essential Glossary series brings an American flavour to its previously exclusive European focus. Although the title implies it covers purely American literature, it does deal in some depth with American culture in general, including important historical and political events. In his short introduction, Matterson stresses the work is far from exhaustive, being intended as a reference work for all students of American studies, particularly undergraduates. The work succeeds in this admirably and far more, presenting itself as a fun and fascinating read.
