Philosophers think, architects design, chemists experiment, psychologists assess; but sociologists survey. The small social research survey is the core of sociological activity. As a high proportion of social scientists come from a non‐scientific or non‐mathematical background however, they often find difficulty in grasping the scientific concepts and technical methods involved in conducting social research.

There are innumerable small handbooks designed to cater for this problem. Any academic library is likely to end up with shelves of them, all covering much the same material from various angles. This one differs from most of the throng in being designed in alphabetical order...
