There is an important difference between the first edition of this work, published in 1985, and this one. The earlier edition covered writers of supernatural fiction who were primarily of historical importance, while a minority of essays focused on modern British and American writers. This volume has reversed that emphasis, ditching the historical writers entirely – hang on to that first edition! – and focuses on “who have been or were active since 1985”.
