I have reported before of my puzzlement of what, exactly, constitutes a “Companion”. Like Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Routledge, and other publishers, Sutton has joined the club. The Sutton Companion to Churches is, in fact, the third Sutton Companion to be compiled by this author alone: Castles (review forthcoming in Reference Reviews) and Local History are the others. Churches was first published in 1996 and is now revised and published as a heavyweight paperback ‐ not really a companion to accompany you on your browse round churches, though I suppose it could be left in the car!
