“Few things”, declares the author of this encyclopedia in his preface, “have occasioned such human misery as military technology”, but he goes on to argue convincingly for its importance as a subject of study. He has condensed it into 600 entries, ranging in length from 50 to 2,000 words. The entries attempt to cover all significant topics from all periods of history, though he confesses a bias in favour of the UK, the USA, Germany and Russia, on the grounds that these countries have dominated military technology since 1800 (but what about earlier periods?).
