The Facts on File Companion to 20th‐Century American Poetry is a selective guide which seeks to document and explain the evolution of American poetry during the last century. Presented in encyclopedia format, this reference work contains nearly 500 entries (from over 200 contributors) devoted mostly to individual poets, influential poems, and literary schools/trends. Despite the arbitrary nature of dividing literary eras by the calendar, editor Kimmelman argues convincingly in favor of this choice, stating that it was not until the 20th century that American poetry fully emerged as a distinct style, independent of other literatures in English.
