If truth be told I suspect I learned as much ancient Greek history from the novels of Mary Renault as I did from the rather dry‐as‐dust (now called classics of course) history books set me at school and university. Her novels were certainly more readable. I don't think, from memory, I can quite make the same claim for Alfred Duggan's Roman history novels. Historical fiction has long been, and will certainly remain, a widely popular form of reading, and while I do not consider myself a particularly “genre” reader I note with interest how many of the titles recorded here...
