In striving for authority, any encyclopedia is by its very nature ambitious. However, the ghost of Frankenstein's monster comes to mind and potentially looms very large over this enterprise, dealing with two popular, expansive and complex fields. The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy is vast in scope and in length, at just under 1,400 pages. If, though, it is a little overreaching, it would be an overstatement to compare the editor, a University of California academic who has been aided by an advisory panel of six, to the monster's hapless creator.
