It is not just contemporary terrorism that has reminded us of the powerful tensions between religion and politics: it has been a fascinating and complex relationship throughout history. The proliferation of books about religion and politics in recent years confirms continuing interest (think of radical religion, liberation theology, Christianity and Islam, Christianity in China, extremism and the Christian right, and the Pope and Nazism – for starters).
