Readers may well want and need to know something of the bibliographical backdrop to this impressive work. The Catholic Encyclopedia was originally published between 1907 and 1914 – a fifteen volume work, one to fourteen of which came out between 1907 and 1912 with the fifteenth, an index, issued in 1914. It became a classic of Catholic scholarship and information. The project started up again in 1958 and the New Catholic Encyclopedia (NCE) was published in 1967 by McGraw‐Hill for The Catholic University of America in Washington DC (which owned the copyright).
