Think back to 1991 – it was a great turning point in history. The Soviet Union had collapsed and 15 different republics had arisen from the ashes. The old Russia (to use an inexact term) lost a quarter of its territory and half its population. Ukraine alone represented a “loss” of 45 million people, although for Ukrainians it was a moment of national liberation. Yet even after that great fissure, there was still an awful lot of Russia left. This book is about the residual Russian state which emerged once the dust had settled.
