A Companion to Modern British and Irish Drama 1880‐2005

Hundreds of British and Irish plays were written and performed in the nineteenth century before 1880 but few survive. After that date comes a flood of memorable drama, beginning with playwrights like Ibsen (in translation) and four great Irish writers: Shaw, Wilde, Synge and Yeats. Then we have among many others O'Casey and Coward in the 1920s, Auden and Isherwood in the 1930s, Eliot and Fry, John Osborne and the Angry Young Men, Beckett, Pinter and Stoppard.
