This is a wonderful book. If not quite holding the world in a grain of sand, its achievement in presenting a vast, to outsiders largely unknown, region of the world into a single very attractive volume is considerable. Its defects are minor, its virtues very considerable. These include the vastness of the area covered, the geographical, historical and other contexts it includes, and the detail in which it is all described.

The coverage is remarkable. In geographical area it deals with Siberia in greatest detail, but also includes coverage of the whole of the Arctic North: Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland,...
