This two‐volume work covers a wealth of information on the development of the sciences and medical arts in non‐Occidental cultures. Somewhat curiously for such a large work the book opens with only the most perfunctory of introductions, segueing into the main body of the text without any detailed preface. Whilst this reviewer could understand the belief that many readers would not be concerned with detailed preliminaries, their omission makes the definition of the anticipated reader level unclear. Potentially this risks alienation of casual readers.
