This book provides an overview of the contribution to science from the African American community. As would be expected by its title, the work focuses solely on the residents of North America, rather than those from the global black community. The preface notes that in many ways the work is a companion to the author's American Scientists (Carey, 2006), and that it was developed in part as a response to criticism of the coverage of African American scientists in the earlier title.
