Founded in 1973, the Southern Oral History Program (SOHP) has a database that contains more than 4,000 textual and recorded interviews documenting the “ordinary” lives of modern people living in the American south. The project began at the Center for the Study of the American South, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and set out on a mission to provide a new outlook on southern history while documenting historical events and developing an unparalleled research source.
