Spain has long been recognised for its contribution to European culture in the fields of literature, art and music. Whilst Miguel Cervantes' novel about the exploits of would‐be giant slayer Don Quijote quickly became a best‐seller throughout Europe in a range of translations, Spanish art as embodied in the works of Velazquez and El Greco took longer to gain the recognition it enjoys today.
