The term “gothic” brings to mind crumbling castles, macabre tales and a propensity for wearing black and in modern parlance can be used to describe styles of architecture, art, literature, film and dress. The editor of this revised handbook, Marie Mulvey‐Roberts, is indeed keen to stress that gothic is no longer limited to literature by definition, and that many areas of mainstream culture are influenced by this dark and brooding genre.
