The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Homes through World History

This a companion to The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Homes through American History (Paradis, 2005) previously reviewed in these columns (RR 2006/62). The American set covered 500 years of history in four volumes. Three volumes now cover world architecture from 6000 BCE to the present. As the author, an academic and practising architect, admits, this has to be a selective survey. The importance of both sets is that most histories of buildings tend to be histories of public or state buildings – churches, palaces, schools and the like; domestic buildings are usually neglected.
