The late 1990s was a chaotic period for the teaching of Canadian history. In January 1999, the Association for Canadian Studies and the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada jointly hosted a conference on teaching and learning history in Canada. The despair of the conference was evident. The state of history teaching as well as the place of history as a subject in the curriculum was in deplorable. When Jack Granatstein published his thought provoking Who Killed Canadian History? a good part of the blame was put clearly on the shoulders of teachers of history in Canada.
