In his review of a companion work to this, on the Aral Sea (Zonn, 2009) (RR 2009/296), Martin Guha bemoaned the illegibility of its maps, the inadequacy of its illustrations and the text abounding with “bizarre mistranslations”. I have to report that in the case of this volume most of the maps are at least legible, although still in black and white, which leads to some confusion, and the illustrations generally relevant and well enough reproduced. Sadly the “bizarre mistranslations” still abound and I am forced to agree that the text reads like machine translation from a presumably Russian...
