Among the growing number of dictionaries in the Scarecrow sub‐series covering War, Revolution and Civil Unrest, this is the only one to be confined to the history of a single navy (which can trace its origins back to state navies established before the US itself). The first edition, which I have not seen, was published in 1998: the second has certainly been much expanded, being 120 pages longer, but it is not made clear what has been added.
